info
The Houma Terrebonne Community Band was formed in March of 1984 with only 5 members. The group originally practiced in the band room at Vandebilt Catholic High School. With advertising, the group grew over the first few months to almost 30 people. After the first year, the band was able to function on its own and filed for a non profit corporation status. Over the years they have practiced in over 13 different band halls throughout Houma, with current practices at Southdown School Stadium. They have also had over 300 performances. Some members been around through the entire existence of the band.
Anyone is welcome to become a part of the band; sign up sheets are available at every rehearsal. The ages and occupations of the members vary, from the youngest members at about 16 years old to some of the older members who are retired. Most of the members have participated in high school band programs and join the band after many years of not having played their instruments. They just come in and pick up where they left off.
The Houma Terrebonne Community Band usually has about 40 members and performs regularly at the Southland Mall, the historic district of downtown Houma, the Houma Civic Center, and the Houma Municipal Auditorium. Annual performances include an Anniversary Concert, a Spring Concert, Patriotic Concerts, and Christmas Concerts. The goal is to play for the enjoyment of the members, to become the best we can be, and to serve the community.

As band membership grew, some members began gathering at a local music store to play music associated with the well-known swing and society bands popular from the 1920's to the early 1960's. The group concentrated on playing the standards and classics of groups formed by Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Glen Gray, Les Brown, the Dorsey brothers and other lesser known band leaders.
These musicians decided to include this stage band as an arm of the Houma-Terrebonne Community Band for the enjoyment of live audiences as well as for themselves.
The stage band's repertoire has grown to include many of the more listenable and danceable contemporary pieces. From that point, the Houma-Terrebonne Community Stage Band has been performing for residents of nursing homes, telethons, community group-sponsored activities, conventions, meetings of various travel groups, school and church-sponsored activities, along with parish government and school board-sponsored functions.
Membership in this band is open. The instruments for which this type of music is arranged includes saxophone, clarinet, trumpet or cornet, trombone, bass, guitar, drums, and keyboard.
The Stage Band is available for playing banquets, festivals, dedications, conventions, holiday and other special events.
